Whilst doing a clear out I stumbled across some prints from my first trip to kenya when I was 10. At this point I wasn't at all interested in photography, and new nothing about it... I think I wanted to be either a pilot or a painter. Seeing my snapshots of Nairobi from when I was a kid reminded me of one of my favorite projects shot in Africa called Shootback which is well worth a look. For the book they visited a slum in Nairobi and handed a load of kids some 35mm cameras and some film and got them to document their lives in the slums. The end result accompanied with the kids notes and annotations is I believe one of the most honest and telling photo stories depicting poverty in Africa, something I think any Western photographer would be hard pushed to achieve.
